Traditionally, businesses have invested heavily in server software and Blackberry handsets to allow employees to have to their work email on the go. Today, many employees are buying their own - non Blackberry - handsets that allow access to work email without the need for expensive server software to be implemented.
This trend has prompted RIM - manufacturer of Blackberry - to announce an upcoming release of their free server software offering: Blackberry Enterprise Server Express. Until now, businesses have had to pay a great deal for the privilege of having an in-house Blackberry solution. The free version of the Blackberry server allows up to 2000 users and 35 remote IT controls (such as remotely wiping handsets). It also allows employees to use their Blackberries to sync their email, calendar, contacts, notes, and tasks; manage email folders and search email; check for calendar availability, book meetings, and forward calendar attachments; and access network-based files.
